Styles, Accessories, & Questions to Ask: What You Need to Start Vaping

If you’re a shopper new to the world of vaping, finding the best product combinations for your style and preference can seem overwhelming. Even more experienced vape users can be taken aback by the sheer number of options available when it comes to choosing a new vaporizer. But don’t worry. We’re here to make sure you have everything you need to get the best vaping experience possible, whether you’ve never vaped a day in your life or if you’re an experienced e-cig user just looking to change up your routine.

What is Vaping?

Just in case you’re brand new to vaping, here’s a crash course on the basics you should know before purchasing your first vaporizer. If you’re a bit more of an experienced user, feel free to skip ahead, or use this as a good refresher to learn a few things you maybe didn’t know before!

Everyone knows what cigarettes are: sheets of thin paper wrapped around a core of tobacco and usually containing a filter at one end. But despite their explosive popularity over the last few years, many people don’t know exactly what an e-cig is or how vaping is actually done. Vaping products, also known as e-cigarettes or an e-cig, were originally created as a high-tech replacement for cigarettes. Though the goal is the same — to inhale nicotine — many people believed that vaping was just another way to smoke traditional tobacco, which isn’t true in the slightest.

While cigarettes deliver nicotine by burning tobacco products, they also deliver thousands of dangerous chemicals. E-cigarettes and vapes, on the other hand, don’t burn tobacco and instead heat a liquid to the point of vaporization, which the user can then inhale through a mouthpiece. Since there’s no combustion occurring, there’s also no smoke. And while many liquids do contain nicotine, there are also several products on the market that contain both reduced levels of nicotine as well as options with no nicotine at all.

Types of Vapes

Knowing the different vaporizer types is important before beginning to think about what product you want to purchase. The main styles of vaporizers are vape pens and box mods. Let’s check out some of the most popular styles and brands and learn a bit more about what makes each one unique.

Vape Pens

As you can probably guess from the name, a vaporizer pen is a style of vaping device that is designed to resemble a pen. Vaping pens are a great choice for beginners who are looking to transition from smoking marijuana joints or tobacco cigarettes to a vaping device. While they offer more advanced features and greater battery power than the traditional e-cig, they’re also more compact and discreet than other styles of vaporizer devices.

The design consists of a battery and an atomizer and is fairly simple. For those who are wondering, an atomizer is one of, if not the most important, component within your vaporizer.  The term “atomizer” is used to describe any device that converts the material to vapor. Housed within the atomizer is a coil that is responsible for heating the liquid that then creates the vapor, making your e-cig more than just a useless tube with a battery inside. Vape pens come in several styles themselves based on the different types of materials that users can utilize the product to vape- including oil, dry herbs, and wax concentrate. One thing to pay attention to is the battery size as well as the cartridge size that the vaporizer accommodates. The smaller the tank or cartridge size, the less material it can hold. The smaller and less powerful the battery, the shorter the length of time between charges as well as potentially the size of the vapor cloud that is produced.

Box Mods

Box mods are a step above vape pens in terms of ease of use and level of experience required. E-cig devices and vaping pens tend to be fairly simple and straightforward. Box mods are usually a bit more expensive and offer users a larger variety of features that are a step above what you can find in a typical vape pen. If you’re a bit more advanced in vaping, however, or if you’re confident you can master some of the extra features, a box mod may be for you.

Box mods with output between 20-50 watts are known as beginner box mods. One important reason to learn about the atomizer and its purpose is that most beginner box mods don’t come with one. Therefore, it’s up to the user to purchase it independently. Box mods are a bit bulkier in terms of comparison to the vape pens and oil pens, so some users may be turned off by the fact that they’re a bit less discreet.

Pod Mods

Pod mods are fairly innovative and are being talked about by some as the future of vaping. The devices are small, ultra-portable, and lightweight, making them a great choice for those looking to keep their vaping discreet. Pod mods feature the ease of use and discreet nature of a vape pen but look more like a portable power bank for your phone or a music player. They’re perfect for those who may feel overwhelmed by the number of choices offered by traditional vaping devices and flavors, mainly because they don’t offer a huge flavor selection or produce a ton of vapor. While they used to have fairly short battery life, users can now expect higher production batteries and new features such as temperature control and additional flavors being added. Long story short, they’re definitely a viable option for those looking to get started vaping.

Mechanical Mods

The other vaporizer option that exists for users is something known as a mechanical mod. Mechanical mods are created out of tubes that utilize a battery to power the atomizer. Though they used to be the most powerful vaping devices, most box mods have improved enough to surpass them. Though mechanical mods are available, we don’t recommend them for beginners because they require a semi-advanced knowledge of Ohm’s Law, which isn’t exactly a super common thing to have.

For anyone who has visited a vaping shop or searched for vaporizers or e-cig devices on the internet, there’s obviously no shortage of brands and features to choose from. While it can seem overwhelming, it definitely doesn’t have to be! That’s why we’ve compiled some of our favorites for those looking to branch out in their vaping, or for those just getting started with their first vaporizer.

If vape pens stood out to you, we suggest checking out the PAX Era. It offers users a long-lasting battery with a discreet body style that allows users to carry and utilize their vaping device whenever and wherever they want. In addition, users can choose pods from more than 50 different partners of the Era, offering over 250 different flavors and strengths to choose from. The PAX Era also is smartphone compatible, making it a bit more advanced in terms of first-time users. However, it’s still simple enough to master, making it a contender for those looking to give it a try. Plus, it’s crazy affordable. Check out the price and details by clicking here.

Smok Nord Starter Kit

One thing that we mentioned earlier was starter kits. Smok offers a great option that’s not only affordable, but it’s received stellar reviews as well. Featuring a mesh design on the front, the Smok Nord starter kit offers users a button-triggered pod system, a long-lasting 1100mAh battery, and a large pod chamber. In addition, it has two different coils, providing users with increased power and increased vapor cloud capabilities. At only 94mm high, 30mm wide, and 18.8mm deep, the Smok Nord easily fits in your pocket to offer discreet vaping, if you so choose. Click here to check out the different colors and see if it’s something that fits your lifestyle!

Another great option for vaping is the PAX 2 Vaporizer. A bit more robust than the PAX Era, the PAX 2 features a higher capacity battery, four heat settings with lip and motion sensing to optimize temperature and power, and a one-button press-to-use interface. The biggest difference between the PAX 2 and other vaping devices is the type of product it accommodates. While many users prefer e-liquid, the PAX 2 is made for dry materials. One of its most-advertised features is its motion sensing technology. By recognizing the device’s movement, it allows it to heat up when needed but remain cool when not in use. Not to mention, with an extra deep oven, users can get up to five sessions from one fill. If you’re looking for a bit more advanced features and prefer to vape dry product, the PAX 2 Vaporizer is definitely worth checking out. You can learn more about it by visiting the website here.

Smok NOVO Pod System Kit

Similar to the Smok Nord kit, the Smok NOVO is another all-new pod system giving users awesome bang for their buck. Like its friend the Smok Nord, the NOVO is small, discreet, and designed with a cobra pattern, making it incredibly stylish. Though it comes in darker colors good for blending in, users can also choose from options such as prism rainbow, pink, green, and a bright blue. The NOVO is great for vapers of all skill levels, whether it’s a beginner just getting into vaping or an experienced user looking to simplify their e-cig experience. The Smok NOVO is draw-activated and features a refillable cartridge, meaning users can enjoy any flavor on the market, including e-liquids made with nicotine salts. With a cartridge capacity of 2mL, users can also expect a lengthy session time before having to refill, making it great for on the go vaping.

Do Your Research

Before spending your hard-earned paycheck on just any old vaping device, it’s important to consider a few things:

  • Is discretion important to me?
  • What is my budget?
  • What type of products will I be vaping: e-liquids or dry materials?
  • Do I need addition vaporizer accessories such as carrying cases, batteries, or mouthpieces?

As you can see from the few products that we sampled above, there are a ton of great options that give users the bare minimum, as well as other devices with more features than you can imagine ever needing. Those who are just looking for the basics can forego features like variable temperatures or increased cloud capability. If you’re planning to travel with your vaping device, you’ll want to make sure to take note of things such as battery life and tank size.
